Global Initiatives

Worldwide observance of World Day leads to worldwide events and actions

World Day observance is spreading to more countries on each continent with every year. Victims feel a link with fellow victims in other countries, as do those working to prevent crashes with colleagues elsewhere.

 

Joint initiatives can strengthen this link, and even give hope and energy to those taking part - through the knowledge that they are not suffering or struggling alone.

 

Several global initiatives have already been introduced and others are being suggested:

Remember road victims on World Day with a Light - especially between 6 - 8pm

This initiative involves the burning of a light (candle or other light, even switching on of cell-phones or torches) and the illumination of houses, porches and civic buildings - in memory of a road victim and all road victims worldwide – on the World Day of Remembrance - from 6pm to 12 midnight - and especially between 6-8pm.

For maximum impact, this initiative would need to be publicised widely - locally, regionally, nationally and internationally, esp. by the media and celebrity supporters.

Government Recognition of the World Day of Remembrance PDF Печать E-mail

The UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/60/5 on 26 October 2005, welcoming the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, and inviting ‘Member States and the international community to recognize this day’.

Official recognition by Governments of the World Day of Remembrance is therefore being suggested as a global initiative, with responses expected to be positive and reflecting the importance accorded the issue of road danger reduction by individual governments.

Calls for national memorials to road crash victims are increasing, together with calls for official recognition of the World Day of Remembrance by Governments. Their presence would be a signal to society and to road crash victims of a country’s serious response to road carnage.

Make Roads Safe is a global campaign calling on world leaders to make commitments to road safety, including at the planned ministerial conference in Moscow in 2009.
Please mark the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims by signing the 'MAKE ROADS SAFE' petition and encouraging others to sign.

Tragedies are even more terrible when they occur on a special day. No one should die on the day on which road victims are being remembered - the World Day of Remembrance!

A Day of Peace is therefore suggested as a global initiative – a day of respect by and towards all road users, a day on which exceptional care is taken by motorists, a day of courtesy at the wheel, a day when all road laws are respected – so that a day without any crashes resulting in injury or death will become a reality everywhere.
