Nicholas Nimo, President of the CECON Organization in Ghana writes: The following are the activities that will be organized on 21st November in Ghana:
CALL ON DRIVERS TO DRIVE WITH ‘HUMAN FACE’
CECON ORGANIZATION is a Non Governmental Organization, formed by road accident victims, which is legally registered under appropriate laws of Ghana. The organization is committed to advocacy and awareness creation on the plight of accident victims as well as enhancement of their economic and the entrepreneurial abilities.
As part of her activities, the organization has formed strong collaboration with the National Road Safety Commission to undertake vigorous road safety campaign using the experiences and testimonies of road accident victims to support the national agenda of reducing road accidents and its associated effects on victims.
CECON Organization after carefully studying how the trends of events and issues concerning victims of road accidents in the country is being handled, there has been the need to bring to the fore of policymakers and road users, especially drivers, the need to drive with focus on the life of passengers and their own precious life and drive with ‘human face’.
We are more concerned about the rate at which the number of roads accident is rising too much with the need to halt or reduce it to barest minimal. Users of the road must know that everyone can be a victim, and go through the challenges and difficulties that those who have been rendered ‘disabled’ through this otherwise avoidable accident faces, lets be careful in our use of the road especially this Christmas season.
Even more, most discussions deliberations on road accidents do not go further to find out the economic, psychological and emotional effects on the victims and their families who have got involve in such accident, how they are refused any form of insurance and compensations. All we learn later is tat these persons are referred to as ‘disabled’ suffering from all kinds of discrimination from the public.
More worsened, there are a huge number of road accident victims who do not get any form of insurance or compensation for the damage done to him/her. Through accident victims lose their jobs, profession and sometime dignity in the society because of their disabilities. A lot more of these people who where hitherto responsible parents or adults have been neglected by their families and become burgers and ‘burden’ on their families and the nation. Who cares for them and ready to listen to their plight? Are we going to sit down for such a menace to kill the citizens of this country and render a lot more with some disabilities?
Can’t we do anything about this cancer? We think a lot more must be done to reduce the road accidents and more so create some support platform for the victims to use in the absence of any insurance.
The road users especially drivers must see those who have involved in accident as some people who were sometime fit and have been rendered ‘disabled’ as a result of faulty vehicular parts or negligence on their part, and therefore should change their attitude towards the use of the road and drive with more value placed on the human being instead of the money.
Overtaking, over speeding, overloading, tiredness, stress, phone calls as well as lack of attention and concentration are some of the things victims have experienced as causes of their road accident. Drivers must therefore be careful and do well to observe them and avoid them entirely to preserve the human dignity and life.
Drivers must wear their seat belt as a measure to avoid unnecessary damage to their body and sometime death in time of accident. it is for their own good, not just for the sake of the belt.
