Initiatives in Italy by AIFVS for WDoR November 15, 2009
The Italian Association of Road Victims and Families, committed in fighting the underestimation of road carnage, on the occasion of World Day of Remembrance renews the request to Italian mayors for lighting an important monument in their town. The metaphor of light has the meaning of turning the spotlight on a massacre that can’t be underestimated anymore, and of increasing the sense of responsibility in institutions and companies, to ensure human rights. Written communications were sent to the Chairman of the Italian Municipalities Association and to the Mayors of the cities where we operate through our 110 local branches.
In addition, in order to address the broader public, we asked the President of the Italian Football Federation to spread a message in Italian stadiums, to give all players and public some data to think about, to support the call for responsible driving: "On the Italian roads we lose the game of life: every day – every day I say – 14 people killed, 893 wounded, more than 20 of whom report serious and permanent disability. Let us not be responsible for this horrendous massacre! Don’t booze, don’t push on the throttle, drive slowly: going back home is beautiful!".
In the Sunday mass leaflet we obtained the insertion of a liturgical prayer for the road victims, so that in all Catholic churches people will pray for the victims, and in many parishes will be given special importance to this event.
To the highest State offices we addressed the request to recognize the World Day of Remembrance, also by providing themselves events of memory and commitment. And we also asked for a message on the occasion, to endorse information sharing and commitment. To our Minister of Justice we sent a proposal to adjust the law to victims’ demands of justice, with a request of his participation at the next meeting.
In our local offices there will be many common activities, such as lighting a monument, religious participation, spreading of AIFVS materials, the use of the common European poster proposed by FEVR. Furthermore, in many places special events will be held: the request for naming streets and for authorizing a monument, conferences, football matches, crosses in the squares, silent processions to cemeteries to lay a flower on each victim’s grave, lunches of sharing, chorus of treble voices from the Alessandria Conservatory, path of communication and social awareness on road education for youths in Bologna.
